If you missed the first witchy assignment (sensing subtle energy with your hands), you can catch up here. It’s a foundational skill that’ll come in “handy” (get it? 😏 yes, I’m a dork) as we move forward.
This week, we’re taking it up a notch by working with Earth energy, drawing it up from the soles of your feet and through your body—without losing track of where it’s going. This can be easier said than done, but in spellcasting, being able to direct energy where you want it to go is super important.
And in the next email, we’ll combine everything we’ve done so far with some spellworking.
As you move through the following practice, notice where your awareness flows easily…and where it doesn’t.
Perhaps you encounter areas of your body where it’s tricky to maintain focus or where it’s harder to sense the energy moving, like the body equivalent of a cell-signal dead zone.
We’ll unpack why that matters after the exercise.

Earth Energy Practice
🪑 Sit in a quiet spot where you can comfortably plant your feet on the floor. Close your eyes, and invite your awareness inward by focusing on your breath. You might rest one hand on your belly, one hand over your heart, to help you sink into a state of calm.
Wiggle your toes, bringing awareness to your feet. Feel where your soles touch the floor.
Slowly roll your weight from instep to the outer edge, feeling the different points of contact. Find a place in the middle where your soles feel alive and aware, well supported by the ground.
It’s time to draw in Earth energy.
Send your focus into your soles, and on the inhale, imagine breathing through your feet. Inhale through your soles, exhale through your soles.
🦶 Feel Earth energy welling up from the ground. Draw it in through your soles with each inhale, letting it rise through your body…
traveling past your ankles…
slowly moving up your calves and shins…
smoothing over your knees to flow up your thighs…
rising higher to fill the bowl of your pelvis…
Notice if your tailbone grows a little heavier, inviting your lower back to soften.
🌱 Continue drawing Earth energy upward, into your belly…
feeling it spread side to side, front to back as you breathe…
Rising higher to expand behind your lower ribs…
filling the dome of your diaphragm…
💖 As the energy swells upward visualize your heart as a golden-pink core of light, drawing Earth energy like a magnet.
In your heart, the energy is infused with divine love. Rest here for a few breaths, enjoying the sensation.
Begin drawing the energy higher, letting it fill your upper chest…
drawing in more with each breath so the energy spills down both arms…
flowing all the way down to your fingertips.
🔹 Gently return your attention to the base of your throat, inhaling to draw Earth energy upward, letting it expand to fill your neck…
drawing it higher, letting it fill the space between your ears…
enlivening your lips, your nose, your eyes, the space between your brows…
filling out the contour of the back of your head.
👑 The energy rises further still, cascading from your crown like a fountain, filling your aura.
Stay here as long as you like, and then release the breathing sensation in your soles, letting them return to a neutral state.
Let the fountain of energy at your crown naturally taper off.
Wiggle your fingers and toes, and when you’re ready…open your eyes.
Check in:
How do you feel? Do a gentle body scan, noticing any areas with noticeable sensation. Do any specific thoughts or emotions arise?
A quick tip: if you’re feeling like you’ve had five cups of coffee or are excessively sluggish and heavy, gently ground yourself by pressing your palms to the floor or coming into child’s pose, letting your forehead rest on the ground if that’s comfortable. Imagine any excess energy pouring out of you like cool rain, soaking back into the Earth.
❓What did Earth energy feel like to you?
Was it warm and dense? Rooted and steady? Did it move like syrup, like sap, like heat? Or was it hard to feel at all? Did it feel different from the energy sensing exercise you did with your hands last week?
Did certain areas of your body seem to go mysteriously offline as the energy moved through, like your awareness flickered off?
Our bodies aren’t just hunks of meat—they’re maps of meaning, fleshly records of all that we’ve experienced. Countless magical traditions have depicted this for millennia. The body as cosmos. The feet as Earth. The crown as stars. The spine like a celestial power line wired with the signs of the zodiac.
These ancient maps posited an energetic cartography—a way to experience the body as a living interface with the cosmos.
Modern science sheds light on this, too.
Neuroscience tells us that areas of the body we don’t regularly bring awareness to—what’s called proprioception (where your body is in space) and interoception (how it feels inside)—are more likely to carry tension, pain, or go stiff and unresponsive over time.
In short: if your nervous system isn’t listening to an area, your energy probably isn’t flowing there very well, either.
In my former work as a Structural Integrator, my role was often about helping someone re-member parts of their body that had been offline, sometimes for decades, as opposed to employing any fancy bodywork techniques.
From a magical perspective…
…those dead zones of awareness can act like energetic blind spots—places where energy can pool and become stuck, unavailable for conscious magic making. That trapped energy doesn’t sit idle, either. It can get caught in loops, casting the same unconscious spell over and over again, outside your awareness.
This is a magical way of describing what Jung called psychological complexes—constellations of feeling, memory, and story that break off from the conscious self and start running their own programs.
A complex might carry an old spell like “I’ll never be good enough,” and without conscious intervention, it keeps gathering energy and playing out in your life, no matter how much intention-setting you do to the contrary.
💡 Bringing attention back into the body—especially into the places where energy seems to vanish—is one of the first steps in building your spellcasting prowess. You’re not just wiggling your toes and breathing into your belly. You’re calling your magical power back from where it’s been bound.

Next week, we’ll bring these energy-sensing practices together in a simple spellworking.
🕯️📝 You’ll need a candle and a spellcasting intention.
See you then!

Coming soon…
